Chapter Ten
L
I darted down the spiral staircase and ran out the front door of my mansion, trying to breathe out of my mouth as my anxiety rose to the clouds. I hit the unlock button on my Range, jumped in and sped down the driveway and out the golden brass gates to my home. I had no idea of a destination at the time, but I needed to be alone at the moment. My heart felt as if it was ripping right out of my chest. I knew that Mama wouldn't live forever in my mind, but in my heart, I always felt that she forever would. I didn't know how I could live my life without the only piece I had left of my mother besides my brother. I wanted badly to go back to the house and for my family tell me that it was all just a joke, and I was dreaming. This just couldn't be real. Mama always said that she didn't want to leave this Earth until we gave her some great-grandchildren, so I guess since Junior was here and Little Bro was expecting his first child, it was her time to go. I guessed that old Louisiana saying was true: one life ends when another one begins.
I sped down the highway as thick tears blurred my vision. I felt like life was catching up with me. All the bad things I had done were boomeranging back to me. I knew that eventually, my karma would come knocking on my door, and here it was. I drove down highway 45 South until I reached the island. I exited 61st Street and drove along the seawall until I found an empty place to park. I cracked my windows and listened to the sound of the waves as they hit along the large rocks. It was soothing. I hadn't been out here since the day we had come to look for my baby. I now understood why she loved sitting on the beach; it was calming.
I grabbed my bottle of Hennessy Pure White from the passenger seat, jumped out of my truck and made my way down the sandy steps towards the beach. Tears continued to flow from my eyes as I placed the bottle of liquid love to my lips to numb my aching heart. I slowly walked to the large rocks and sat down with my back against the rocks. I tried to stop my overflowing tears, but I was unsuccessful. I didnât know just how I would live my life without Mama.
My mind instantly drifted back to the night my parents were murdered.
When I called my grandmother, she arrived at our house no less than twenty minutes later. The local police arrived before her, and she instructed me on the phone before we ended our call not to say anything to the police. I did what I was told and stayed silent until Mama arrived. The events of the night played over in my head for weeks.
